Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in Nuuk, Greenland, 12 May

Mr Morten Høglund (MP, Norway) Chair of the Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region (CPAR) participates at the Arctic Council ministerial meeting in Nuuk, Greenland on 12 May . The US member of CPAR, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R, Alaska) participates through the American delegation to the meeting.

Mr Høglund welcome Agreement on Search and Rescue in Arctic, the first legal binding agreement within the framework of Arctic Council. Høglund emphasize the need to solve the problem how to include observer states into Arctic Council to keep the council as the arena for Arctic issues.

He further underline the need of a permanent secretariat for the Arctic Council with sufficient financial strength. To strengthen the follow up the International Polar Year it is necessary to convene a meeting of the Ministers of Education and Research of the Arctic countries.
