Improved Arctic oil spill response and prevention is needed

The need of improved Arctic cooperation on oil spill response and prevention was highlighted in the meetings Mr Morten Høglund had with US senators Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich.

As a result of the melting sea ice shipping in Arctic waters is increasing. Oil and gas exploration in Arctic waters is also high on the political agenda in many of the Arctic countries. To be meet this development the Arctic countries need to look at how they can improve their knowledge and cooperation regarding oil spill response.

– The Arctic countries will soon sign an agreement on search and rescue in the Arctic. The next step we need to consider is how we can improve our cooperation on oil spill response and prevention, says Mr Høglund.
